The Artist
Scott Lawrence is an American music composer. He grew up in the South, having moved around a great deal before landing in Atlanta, Georgia for the first part of his young adulthood. He has since made Seattle, Washington his home for the past fifteen years. His passion for music began at age 5 when he started playing piano. By age 12, he had sketched out several piano solo pieces that would later evolve into full compositions, while other melodies would blossom into orchestrated and cinematic scores.
I Didn't Want to Leave You is magical. The piano/guitar/cello ensemble moving in harmonic tandem is very pretty and quite moving.
Scott is now busy working on his first studio album. In it, he will exhibit cinematic themes of upheaval, emotionally charged to season the ear with delicate piano melodies and dramatic orchestrations.
Scott's background stems from a family of musicians on his father's side (Larry Rice), yet having been raised by his mother, he discovered his own propensity to play musical instruments. Frustrated with the slow progress of piano lessons, he used his adolescent years to mature his talent, relying mostly on his ability to play by ear. While attending Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, he studied music very briefly. After moving to Seattle, he tackled a more comprehensive scrutiny of music theory, composition, and digital audio recording through an intense, two-year program at Shoreline Community College.
More recently, Scott has set up a home studio and continues to grow within the recording industry, using software like Digital Performer, Pro Tools, and Logic Pro to produce his unique sound. He's cultivated a strong discipline to self-teach, originated two music videos, and has worked on several collaborative projects with other artists.
Excerpts from his debut album have been described as, "Truly evocative"…"Haunting" and "Well produced."
I’m a composer and recording artist who writes music for piano, orchestra, and electronic instruments. Driven by my passion for film, I produce a stylized sound that’s cinematic, applying both skill and instinct to create an emotional journey based on mystery, adventure and fairy tale. I season it with undertones of loneliness, loss, and melancholy to grasp at the heart strings of my audience. Going beyond the realm of incidental, I engage these themes by using various styles, sometimes classical and sometimes modern, spanning a broad range of complexity and seriousness.
My compositions reflect my affinity for drama, suspense, surprise, and syncopation. I construct a precise sentimental quality that speaks louder than ambiance, an emotional movement with a core that’s clear and concise. While wearing the hats of multiple roles: composer, orchestrator, recording engineer, and sound designer; I value the timely process necessary to distinguish each instrument within every piece I complete. Great film composers such as Basil Poledouris, Bernard Herrmann, Danny Elfman, and Michael Giocchino have inspired some of my work. If you hear a song of mine and ask “What movie is that from?”, then I’m excited!
Why create music? I began around age five, with what seemed to be an inherent talent passed down from my father. It has now developed into an opportunity to express and resolve tension, then evolve past it. It’s my “other” voice that flows generously, not limited by a specific vernacular. Music is my ideal medium to express diverse thoughts through rhythm, intense feelings through melody, or vice versa as the creative process reveals its own language. I approach composing personally and intellectually, with tradition or whimsy, and always with a sense of innovation. I write music to haunt my listeners with meaningful substance, as if painting their thoughts and feelings from black & white to color.
